Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic Skills Assessment for Migration to Australia

Are you an Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic looking to work and live in Australia? To successfully migrate, you must complete the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic Skills Assessment through VETASSESS and obtain an Offshore Technical Skills Record (OTSR). This guide will walk you through the key steps, qualification requirements, and how World Access Immigration can assist you with the entire process, ensuring a smooth and successful migration journey.

What is the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic Skills Assessment?

The Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic Skills Assessment (ANZSCO: 342111) is a mandatory process for skilled mechanics seeking migration to Australia. This assessment, conducted by VETASSESS, verifies that your qualifications and work experience meet Australian standards, allowing you to obtain the Offshore Technical Skills Record (OTSR). The OTSR is a crucial document for applying for a provisional license to work as a mechanic in Australia.

Once you have the OTSR, you can begin working under supervision while completing Gap Training to obtain full licensing in Australia.

Who Needs the Skills Assessment?

If you are an international Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic planning to migrate to Australia, you must complete the skills assessment as part of the skilled migration visa application process. The assessment ensures you have the necessary skills, qualifications, and work experience to work in Australia’s competitive job market.

Skills Assessment Process

The Skills Assessment consists of two stages:

Stage 1: Document Preparation and Review

In this stage, you must provide evidence of your qualifications and work experience to VETASSESS. You need to meet one of the following requirements:

  • 6 years of work experience as an Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic without formal training.
  • 4 years of work experience with relevant formal training in air-conditioning and refrigeration.

Documents you will need include:

  • Qualification certificates (if applicable)
  • Proof of at least 12 months of employment in the last 3 years
  • Employment evidence such as wage slips, bank statements, and employer references.

At World Access Immigration, we help you gather and prepare all the required documents for submission to VETASSESS.

Stage 2: Technical Interview and Practical Assessment

Once Stage 1 is successfully completed, you will move on to Stage 2, which includes:

  • Technical Interview: A licensed assessor will ask you detailed questions about your skills, knowledge, and duties as an Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic.
  • Practical Assessment: You will perform a series of tasks in a simulated work environment to demonstrate your technical skills.

The interview and practical assessment are based on units listed in the VETASSESS Fact Sheet. World Access Immigration provides guidance on what to expect during this stage, ensuring you are well-prepared.

Post-Assessment: Licensing and Gap Training

After successfully completing both stages, you will receive your Offshore Technical Skills Record (OTSR) and Skills Assessment Outcome Letter from VETASSESS. With these, you can apply for a Provisional License through the state licensing board in Australia.

Upon arrival in Australia, you will be required to complete Gap Training while working under supervision. Once the additional training is complete, you will be eligible for full licensing, allowing you to work independently as an Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic in Australia.

Note: Gap Training can only be undertaken once you are in Australia and have a provisional license.
